How to Measure Your Child’s Shoe Size

Ensuring that your child is wearing the correct shoe size is vital for their comfort and growth.

Whether they’re jumping about in muddy puddles or running around at school, they need shoes that fit properly to prevent injury and falls.

Today, Village Kids will guide you through a quick way to measure your child’s shoe size for the perfect fitting. Browse our kid's designer shoes today for footwear you can depend on.

The Importance of Accurate Measurement

Children’s feet are constantly growing and developing and wearing correct fitting shoes prevents abnormalities, such as in-toeing or flat feet.

Shoes that are too small can cause blisters, ingrown toenails, and calluses, leading to pain and infections. We suggest measuring your child's feet every few weeks for toddlers, 8-12 weeks for school-aged children, and twice a year for children aged 10 and over.

Tools You'll Need

  • Paper
  • Measuring tape or ruler
  • Pen or pencil
  • A flat surface
  • Shoe size chart

A Step-by-Step Guide to Measuring Your Child's Shoe Size

1. Prepare the Measuring Area

Measure your child's feet at the end of the day when their feet are largest due to natural swelling.

Select a hard, flat surface to complete the measurement. Place the paper down and have your pen and measuring tape ready. Carry out the measurement barefoot for accuracy.

2. Trace the Foot

Have your child stand on the paper with their full weight distributed evenly on both feet.

Holding the pen upright, carefully trace around the entire foot on the paper. Follow the foot's natural shape, capturing every curve and bump.

To keep your child still and distracted, talk to them about an interest of theirs' or place them in front of the TV.

3. Measure the Length

Once you have finished tracing, identify the longest toe on the outline. This is often the big toe.

Then, locate the furthest point on the heel to start your measurement. Using a ruler or measuring tape, place it from the furthest point of the heel to the toe.

Jot your measurement down in centimetres or inches and measure twice for accuracy.

4. Measure the Width

Locate the widest part of the traced foot to measure the width. This is usually across the ball of the foot.

Mark the widest points on the tracing before you measure for accuracy. Then, position the measuring tape across the marked points, ensuring it’s flat against the paper. It should span the foot's width at the widest part without slack or tension.

The width measurement can be found at the point of the tape that aligns with the far side of the foot's outline.

5. Refer to a Shoe Size Chart

Purchase a shoe size chart from a reputable retailer or print one off online. Ensure that it corresponds to your preferred measurement.

Compare the measurements of your child's feet to the chart to find the correct shoe size. If your child falls between sizes, go for the larger size to accommodate for growth.

6. Check for Additional Space

When buying shoes, ensure there is about a thumb's width (roughly half an inch or 1.27 cm) between the front of the shoe and your child's longest toe when standing.

Measure your child’s feet with socks on, if they will be wearing socks with the shoes, to account for the extra thickness.
